The bad: No recordable DVD drive; lacks support for PCI Express expansion cards; small 80GB hard drive; one-year warranty not enough for business users.

The bottom line: The Lenovo 3000 J105 is best suited for basic office and home productivity tasks; but with limited upgrade options and a one-year warranty, better deals are out there.

Overdrive PC Torque SLI's (Athlon 64 FX-57) more expensive and less flashy than other systems, but you simply can't beat the Overdrive PC Torque SLI's gaming performance

Review
In Spaceballs, they called it "Ludicrous Speed." Overdrive PC calls it "Hyperclocking." However you say it, the Torque SLI is fast. Not satisfied with just dual graphics cards or a top-of-the-line Athlon FX-57 (it has both), the Torque SLI also incorporates the virtual nitro boost of overclocked processor, memory, and graphics cards, resulting in some of the fastest benchmark scores we've seen. At $4,968 (as of August 2005), sans monitor and speakers, this system also is the most expensive of the recent high-end PCs we've reviewed. But if you absolutely must have the fastest PC on the block, the Torque SLI will give you bragging rights.

Unlike more stylized competitors, such as the Alienware Aurora 7500, Overdrive houses the Torque SLI in a simple, clean-lined Lian-Li PC-6070 midtower case--black on our review unit but also available in silver or with a custom paint job. A pair of blue LED-backlit, 120mm cooling fans on the left side of the case is the only visual indication that this isn't your average PC.

The clean-cut image dissolves once you remove the two thumbscrews to crack open the case. Inside, the side panels are coated with a foam-rubber sound-damping material. The Asus A8N-SLI Premium motherboard, the hard drives, and even the expansion cards are fitted with stainless steel screws and rubber washers. Cables are carefully routed and clipped to maximize airflow, making for a very neat appearance. Quiet fans also help reduce noise output. Despite state-of-the-art hardware that runs at beyond-rated speeds, the Torque SLI's fans stayed so quiet during our testing that we could hear the hard drive heads moving. There's even a small flashlight clipped to the drive cage; if Overdrive PC had included a screwdriver, it would truly have thought of everything.

The test system was equipped with a pair of 256MB XFX GeForce 7800 GTX graphics cards and a Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS sound card. This combination doesn't leave much room for internal expansion; only a single PCI slot and a couple of memory slots remain open. For external expansion, there's a pair of USB 2.0 ports on the front of the case, and four more on the back. A pair of FireWire ports reside on the back of the Torque SLI, one of which is on the Audigy 2 ZS card.

Test configuration came loaded with storage devices: a dual-layer DVD burner and a DVD-ROM drive; a removable 200GB hard drive; and a pair of 74GB, 10,000rpm hard drives configured in a RAID 0 array. Also onboard was a floppy drive with a built-in media card reader. On top of all of this, there's a pair of open 3.5-inch internal bays, as well as an open 5.25-inch bay. (Two more open 3.5-inch bays surround the RAID array, but you'd probably want to leave them open because of heat considerations.)

If you've ever dabbled with overclocking, you know that extra performance sometimes comes at the cost of system stability. Not so with the Torque SLI, which remained rock stable even when running CNET's extensive game tests and benchmarks on a hot summer day. Overdrive PC calls its overclocking technique Hyperclocking, and the results are impressive. The AMD Athlon 64 FX-57 CPU, rated at 2.8GHz, runs at 3GHz; the dual GeForce 7800 GTX GPUs are bumped from 430MHz to 505MHz, with memory speeds notched up from 1.2GHz to 1.39GHz; and the 1GB of the system's DDR SDRAM runs at 500MHz, up from 400MHz. Overdrive PC also optimizes BIOS and Windows settings for maximum performance.

All of this Hyperclocking pays off with gaming performance that stomps the nearest competitors. Running Half-Life 2 at extremely demanding settings--1,600x1,200 resolution with 4X antialiasing and 8X anisotropic filtering--the Torque SLI managed a whopping 120 frames per second (fps). The next closest competitor, the Velocity Micro Gamer's Edge DualX, was left in the dust at 97fps. Doom 3 scores were similarly impressive, with the Torque SLI benchmarking 105fps at 1,600x1,200, compared to the Velocity Micro's 96.1fps. The Torque SLI blazed through productivity applications as well, with a SysMark 2004 score of 255, the fastest of its group. In fact, the only benchmark test where the Torque SLI came up short was with SysMark 2004's Internet content creation, where it was trounced by the dual-core Athlon 64 X2-equipped Alienware Aurora 7500. PCs with dual-core processors may hold a speed advantage over the Torque SLI in heavy multitasking, but not in single applications or gaming.

The Torque SLI doesn't ship with much software by default; you get Norton AntiVirus 2005, Nero Express for disc burning, the free OpenOffice productivity suite, and an assortment of benchmarking tools and utilities, though you can add other software titles, including games and commercial office suites, at the time of purchase. The Torque SLI's clean desktop and carefully categorized Start menu are testament to its careful fine-tuning. Our test system didn't ship with a monitor or speakers, though a variety of options are available from Overdrive. However, we did get Logitech's Cordless Desktop LX 700 mouse and keyboard set.

Overdrive PC backs the Torque SLI with a one-year parts-and-labor warranty, which includes toll-free tech support, available weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET, and return shipping on repairs. The optional Platinum warranty is available in one-, two-, or three-year lengths (add $100 per year), and we highly recommend it as it covers all associated shipping costs to and from Overdrive PC for repairs. One year of warranty coverage has emerged as the industry standard, but given the system's $5,000 price tag, we think Platinum-level coverage should be the default. Overdrive PC's Web site features a tech-support e-mail address in addition to a well-organized list of manufacturer links for component documentation and drivers. The PC itself includes recovery CDs and the printed user manuals from several of the PC's components, but no overall setup guide. Instead, Overdrive prefers a more personal approach: a company rep will call when you receive your system to walk you through the setup procedure.

Sony VAIO Digital Studio RZ44G, Media Center PC, an excellent PC for the networked home because adds useful server software to the mix.

Review
We were somewhat surprised to see the $1,649 (without monitor) VAIO Digital Studio RZ44G using Microsoft's Media Center Edition (MCE) 2004 OS, since Sony has raised its successful line of multimedia-friendly VAIO desktops on its own Giga Pocket DVR software for recording and pausing TV. Not only because of its clean, easy-to-navigate interface, but also because it gives you control of all your media--not just TV--including pictures, music, and video are the reason we prefer MCE 2004 to Giga Pocket. The RZ44G's traditional tower design isn't living-room friendly, but the RZ44G more than makes up for it by including server software that allows you to hide the PC in a back room and push its stored media content to other networked PCs in your home. Sony's subpar warranty is the only thing that detracts from an otherwise fully featured Media Center PC.

HP Pavilion s7220n Slimline Desktop PC

Overview

The good:
Very affordable; compact design; quiet operation; LightScribe DVD burner; roomy hard drive.

The bad:
System cannot be upgraded or customized; rollerball mouse.

The bottom line:
HP's first small-form-factor PC, the Pavilion s7220n Slimline, is a stylish and able budget performer, but its lack of expandability makes it better suited for use as a second PC.

Review
Small-form-factor (SFF) desktop computers have until recently targeted niche buyers, such as gamers on the LAN-party circuit and city dwellers short on desk space. But earlier this year, with Apple's unveiling of the Mac Mini, the SFF computer began to migrate into the mainstream, thanks to the Mini's aggressive price point. And now, HP is determined to bring the SFF PC to the masses, with the sleek $519.99 (after $50 mail-in rebate) Pavilion s7220n Slimline Desktop PC. The system delivers some impressive goods for an approachable price in an attractive package, with the caveat that you can neither customize nor expand the system. It's about as fixed a fixed configuration as you'll find in a desktop PC.

At 9.7 inches high, 4.4 inches wide, and 13.1 inches deep, the HP Pavilion s7220n Slimline is about the size of a large college dictionary. It's certainly larger than the diminutive Mac Mini, but the s7220n's silver finish and minimal ornamentation come somewhat near replicating the Mini's sleek, understated look. Like the Mini, the s7200n's case isn't intended to be opened by the end user, so HP has smartly outfitted it with a relatively robust feature set most buyers at this price point won't outgrow too quickly. The system features 512MB of RAM, a 9-in-1 flash-card reader, a spacious 200GB 7,200rpm hard drive, and a double-layer DVD burner. HP throws in LightScribe so that you can label CDs and DVDs using the company's proprietary laser technology.

The s7220n achieves its tiny size thanks in part to the use of a notebook processor, the 1.5GHz Celeron M processor 370, which runs more efficiently than a desktop chip. This allows the s7200n to run coolly and quietly in a compact case. Other than the CPU, however, the s7220n uses no other mobile technology--the optical drive and motherboard, for example, are full size and as durable as those on a traditional desktop. HP has even managed to fit the power supply inside the box, so the system requires no external power brick.
But the HP Pavilion s7220n Slimline is a one-size-fits-all deal. You can't up the RAM or opt for a smaller hard drive prior to purchase, which you can do with the Mac Mini. While the company does offer a slightly lower-end configuration--the $449 (after $50 mail-in rebate) HP Pavilion s7210n, available only in retail stores--we'd like to see one configurable option in the Slimline series.

Take wireless networking, for example. Priced as it is, the s7220n will surely find a market as a second PC for the home; being able to network it wirelessly to the family's main computer seems like a no-brainer. The same goes for sound and video--you can't upgrade the integrated solutions found in this budget system, and this limits its appeal, despite its entry-level status. The ability to add more memory a year or two down the road would greatly extend the s7220n's lifespan. If you are looking not for a second PC but a basic budget box to serve as your primary (or only) PC, we suggest the $599 eMachines T6524. It's a standard midtower system but is expandable and more powerful.

In testing, the HP Pavilion s7220n Slimline kept up with budget competitors despite its mobile processor. The s7220n's 125 score on CNET Labs' SysMark 2004 application benchmark tied the score of a Celeron D 340-based Gateway 3200XL, which is a now-defunct standard tower system. Meanwhile, the s7220n outshone another low-profile system, the Shuttle XPC K6200h, based on the Celeron D processor 335, by about 4 percent. Though the Celeron M 370's clock speed is lower than that of Celeron D 335 and 340 chips, its performance is aided by 1MB of L2 cache--quadruple that of either Celeron D chip.

In terms of 3D performance, the s7220n and its integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900 chip pulled a frame rate of 36.5 on our Unreal Tournament test, run at 1,024x768 resolution. That's better than some basic systems but nothing close to what you need for even the midrange games of today. It goes without saying that this is not a system intended for anything resembling serious gaming.

The HP Pavilion s7220n Slimline ships with an Internet keyboard, which features Web buttons and media controls, as well as dual eject buttons when the computer includes only one optical drive. The eject command is a nice thing to have at your fingertips, although in this case, the operation takes a while, leading the user to press the button several times in frustration. This causes a backlog of commands, and the drive continues to open and close until all the commands are executed. It's annoying. Equally annoying is the bundled PS/2 rollerball mouse; we expect an optical mouse with even the cheapest PCs these days. The PS/2 peripherals allow you to keep all five USB 2.0 ports free (four back, one front). There's also one six-pin FireWire port on the back panel along with integrated 5.1 audio ports. A headphone jack sits on the front panel.

At this price, HP could in good faith include no software or documentation. But the company gives you Microsoft Works, Quicken, and PC Doctor system-recovery software. HP also preloads electronic getting-started and PC basics guides on the hard drive and includes some minimal printed documentation.

The system is backed by a standard one-year warranty, which you can upgrade to a two- or three-year plan. We recommend taking advantage of HP's Accidental Damage protection, which you can add to an extended warranty for only $50 more, no matter the warranty's length. You get toll-free phone support for the life of the warranty, but you can use HP's Total Care Web services even after the warranty expires. These services include e-mail support, online chat with a service representative, and a thorough help and support center.
